FE
Profile

Future Expansion was founded on the belief that the future provides us with the opportunity to constantly improve on the past, that previous solutions should not preclude new inventions, and that architecture and urban design are meaningful cultural tools in this endeavor.

Services

Future Expansion provides design and consulting services for architectural and urban projects, including housing, public space, commercial, and master planning efforts. The office works both independently and collaboratively, with partnerships in and outside of the profession, and always with the goal of broadening our projects’ value and positive impact.

FE is a registered WBE.

Partners

Deirdre McDermott (AIA) received her B.Arch from the Cornell University School of Architecture. She has worked in the offices of SOM, CCS and, most recently, as a Director at Moed de Armas & Shannon (MdeAS). At MdeAS, she led projects for major developers in New York working on commercial properties and privately owned public spaces throughout the city. Deirdre is a registered architect in New York State.

Nicholas McDermott (RA, LEED AP) received his BA in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.Arch from the Yale University School of Architecture. At Yale he was awarded the James Gamble Rogers Fellowship and the David Taylor Memorial Prize. He was also a Student Fellow at the Yale Urban Design Workshop, where he worked on public and non-profit design projects with communities in and around New Haven. In New York he has worked for RMA and, earlier, SOM. He currently teaches graduate level design studios at Yale. He has previously taught at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute. Nicholas has been a guest critic at Columbia, Cooper Union, Harvard GSD, MIT, Parsons, Pratt, RISD, and Wesleyan. Nicholas is a registered architect in New York State and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Nicholas serves as a member of the Board of Directors at Design Advocates.

Experience

Future Expansion has an enthusiastic attitude for the creation of new architectural and urban possibilities. It was established on its two partners more than fifteen years of combined experience practicing architecture in New York and their desire to generate a new body of work for, and from, a changing city.

Within the first few months of independent practice the office won an open RFP from the Brooklyn Academy of Music to develop an empty lot in the BAM Cultural District with a large-scale public art installation. The project, which involved collaborations with structural consultants, a contractor, an upstate sustainable materials start-up, a Brooklyn based painter, and a team of first year architecture students from Pratt, opened in June 2012. The office was also a finalist for adAPT NYC, an open RFP issued by the New York Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) to build a high quality and affordable housing model for New York’s growing population of single-person households. More recently the office was the winner of the Van Alen Institute’s annual invited competition for a temporary installation at the Flatiron Building’s north plaza.
